Lancaster Site Revamped Through the Kindness of
Opportunities for Learning
For the Antelope Valley Boys & Girls Clubs, a club site can be at a school site, at a Parks & Recreation building or, its own humble building. For the Lancaster site, (located at 45404 North Division) the one time “Watch & Wager” building is the newest of the Antelope Valley Boys & Girls Club family. Donated by the City of Lancaster, this 15,000 square feet of building space is open for all kids in the Lancaster area.
And, although the Lancaster site is one of the newest of the Boys & Girls Club family, it is still over 30 years old. Always clean, loaded with equipment and games, the site was still in need of a general face lift and some improvements. A new friend to the Boys & Girls Club, “Opportunities for Learning” came—unsolicited and with a strong desire to help A.V.’s youth—and asked if they could help make the club a better place. We said “Yes. The Lancaster location was chosen from over 60 non-profit organizations through-
Opportunities for Learning (OFL) is an accredited individualized academic program that is based on independent study. The independent learning plan that OFL offers is built around each student’s needs, abilities, and dreams for the future. Many students who have had difficulty in traditional schools have found success at OFL.
All the planning and preparation came to fruition, when over 175 employees, friends, spouses and neighbors invaded the Lancaster site, driven with plans, schedules and materials. In perfectly orchestrated, finely planned assault, the Lancaster site saw new paint, a revamped kitchen, computer desks, computers, new cabinets and lighting and a completely revitalized Teen Center and more. Opportunities for Learning had a special visit from their President at a special luncheon to recognize the dedication of all the attendees and special volunteers and staff for their devoted hours to OFL throughout the year.
Countless volunteer hours, were spent on this renovation project. Opportunities for Learning made the Boys & Girls Club noticeably cleaner, brighter and better in countless ways. Driven only by the desire to improve the lives of the children at Boys & Girls Club, Opportunities for Learning and all their staff gave unconditionally, and their only thank you was truly in knowing that they made a long-term difference for the children. The children of the Lancaster site have truly enjoyed the improvements and additions made from the graciousness of this wonderful company and the dedicated staff and volunteers.
There has been no greater single effort of time and materials than this gift of friendship from Opportunities for Learning to the Boys & Girls Club. Staff speaks in awe about the day that a promise was made and kept by the new friends at OFL. There are too many people to list individually, but a special thank you goes out to Katherine Walters who orchestrated the entire project.
